So, what's in this issue?
September marks the end of the summer holiday season, with children heading off to school - many of them for the first time.  So on that very subject, this month's newsletter is about 'first days' and 'inductions'.  Let me share with you my top Induction Tips!

Welcome
We also say a big WELCOME and introduce you to the newest member of our team!

Welcome!

[NAME],  as a firm believer in getting the best out of everyone, I think that a great deal of care and attention should be paid to ensuring that new members of the team are made to feel welcome and at home from the moment they accept the position.

Recruitment can be an expensive game, and the hard work and focus shouldn't stop once we have found a suitable candidate.  As an employer, surely our responsibility is to give the employee every opportunity to perform and more importantly enjoy their role and fit in?  So how we bring them into our company is the first step towards this.

Back to School

With a tear in my eye I have just waved goodbye to my daughter Daisy, as she heads off to her first day at school.

A very proud moment for me, followed by 10 minutes of uncontrollable sobbing that has been threatening to consume me since 6.00am this morning.  I feel better now.

It did, however, make me think of how many more 'first days' she will have ahead of her.  And naturally - being in the business I am in - I ended up thinking about new jobs and those first 90 days - induction, orientation, whatever you want to call it.

If you think about it, getting Daisy to her first day with everything she needs has taken not only emotional adjustment and acceptance but also planning and preparation to make it go smoothly.  Pre-empting everything she may need to have and know from a practical point of view (start times, lunch arrangements etc), while being there to provide support so that she is ready for the move from an emotional standpoint.

Reflecting on how I prepared Daisy for her first day, you can draw useful parallels for preparing any 'new entrant'.

There are, of course, two sides to every story.  In this case mother and daughter, and in business employer and employee.

Let me share with you my top 'Induction Tips'.  These focus on what the employee is experiencing and what the employer 'mindset' and action should be.  For example:

Employee experience

Accepting a new job   -  being excited about the new role, if a bit apprehensive

Employer Mindset/Action

Mindset - we can't wait for you to join and are excited as well!

Action - lots of personal contact to maintain the employee momentum before joining, postcards, emails, letters.

So as I go to collect Daisy this afternoon I will want to know how it was, what her new friends were like, her teacher and how her new uniform fitted.  I am sure I will have more to ask than she will have to tell, and as an employer, maybe you should as well.

Welcome

A huge warm welcome to Emma King, who has joined The Learning Labyrinth Team to support us as Learning and Development Administrator.  Emma has worked in previous administration roles and has recently achieved a Level 1 OCR Office skills and Administration qualification.  Most importantly she has the character and personality to fit perfectly into our business.  She has a three year old daughter, Paris, and lives in Brighton.  She is already making a difference to the way we work - welcome Emma!

These pocket books (the 'Management Pocketbook series') are timeless and this one on Induction presents various ways of introducing a successful induction programme.  In it, Ruth Sangale and Phillipa Webster, consider the benefits of induction, who to involve in its delivery (not just the human resources staff) and who should receive induction (not just new comers).
