Welcome!

11 July, 2011

Many of you will know that I have several passions in my life; my family; my love of training and my strong belief that everyone has potential and a hidden talent.

The role of the trainer is to help individuals gain insight into their own strengths and areas where they may need support.  For many years, I have used Belbin Team Roles to help individuals identify how they work in teams and gain an understanding of how others see them.  Completing a Belbin profile is often a starting point for the development work we do; be it team development, 1:1 coaching or in leadership and management training.

Its all about managing your weaknesses as you strive to get better at what you are good at.

In this Newsletter, I want to tell you about 'GetSet', a (relatively) new Belbin profiling tool aimed at younger people (aged 14-21 years).  I believe this could be used with great results in organisations which have a high number of younger employees.

Best wishes

Gary

What is GetSet?

GetSet is a way of finding out:
  • how individuals can be useful in a team - what do they contribute?
  • how they can talk positively about themselves (eg at an interview)
  • how the people who know them, think they work best.

It is based upon Belbin Team Role theory which has been used by thousands of businesses, all over the world.

GetSet can also help with:
  • improved self-esteem
  • better self-awareness
  • appreciating strengths
  • tolerating weaknesses
  • a better understanding of people differences
  • undestanding of preferrred working environment
  • understanding of importance of working within a team.
Using Belbin has helped our business to understand existing team strengths and given us some useful tools to address skills gaps. Belbin has helped our staff appreciate the different strengths of individuals within the business.  Applying the Belbin approach to develop a job description for a new role within the business has also helped us to focus on and verbalise the key criteria for the role.
Gary is an excellent moderator and has an in-depth knowledge of the Belbin approach which has helped us to understand and apply the Belbin findings very quickly and effectively within our business.

Who is it aimed at?

GetSet is aimed at younger people aged 14-21 years.  It has been designed for those who have little (or no) experience of the workplace. So, although the outcomes make use of Belbin theory, the profiling tool is designed specifically for younger people.

When can it be used?

GetSet is a great tool for giving young people personal insight so they can make informed choices.
It can specifically help to support younger individuals who are:

  • working together in teams
  • making choices about their careers
  • preparing for interviews

Who could use it?

GetSet can be used in any organisation which has a number of younger employees, such as:

  • leisure industry
  • hospitality
  • tourism.

In addtion to the workplace, GetSet has a wider application, eg in charities that support this age group.  I have been working with Tourettes Action where GetSet helps focus the individual on positive aspects of their behaviour - so important with this group.  Tourettes Action is a charity working to make life better for people with Tourettes Syndrome.  This is a fantastic charity which provides advice and practical support for individuals and families.

I came across Tourettes Action when we sought some information from them as a family. My son, Harry, was disgnosed with Tourettes about three years ago.  He can be seen here (9 times) exploring 'what am I going to do when I grow up?'. With GetSet there is no 'pigeon holing', young people are encouraged to try out all the roles.

Harry has completed the GetSet profile and I am now working with TA to get more young people from their charity involved. To see Harry's GetSet profile, click here.

Springboard UK

Finally, on the 17th June 2011, I was priviIedged to attend Springboard UK's 21st Anniversary Fundraising Party  at Grosvenor House, London (and I won a weekend at the luxurious Langham Hotel in London).  Springboard UK supports young, unemployed and disadvantaged people into careers in hospitality, leisure and tourism.  In addition to working with individuals, they work with partner businesses to improve the image, skills and careers in this sector.

We look forward to working with the Springboard Team in the coming months.

To find out more about GetSet, or to discuss any of your training and development needs, give me a call on 07843 593534.

My very best wishes

Gary
