Aim of the ILM First Time Leader Endorsed Award

To provide those new to management with the basic skills needed to manage themselves and others.

 

Target Audience

Supervisors, team leaders and managers new to their role

 

Objectives

This course will enable candidates to:

  • Explain the 4 D’s to planning and prioritising
  • Understand the ABC system for prioritising
  • Understand the link between time management and delegation
  • Identify personal barriers to effective time management
  • Manage performance against agreed objectives     
  • Apply Tuckman’s theory of team development      
  • Use effective feedback skills
  • Explain the purpose of performance appraisals
  • Describe the difference between coaching and training
  • Coach a member of staff using the GROW model

     

Structure

A 4 module programme comprising 18 guided learning hours in total, which can be delivered flexibly to suit your needs.  We can deliver modules on consecutive days - or spread the programme out over a number of months.

Pre-course work

Prior to the first module, each individual will complete an on-line self perception inventory with the rest of their team or colleagues completing observer assessments. This will give each person a full 360 degree Belbin profile for themselves and their teams. 

Further pre-course work includes:

  • Module 2 - Time Management evaluation questionnaire
  • Module 3 - Managing performance evaluation   
  • Module 4 - Coaching ‘skills’ wheel

 

Module 1.  Introduction to Leadership

This module takes the principles of 'the one minute manager' by Ken Blanchard and Belbin team profiling and puts them into practise, focusing on adopting a flexible approach to leadership and team dynamics.

Module 2.  Managing yourself

We will look at how effective managers and leaders plan, prioritise and control their diaries and how we can benefit from best practise, making it individual and actionable.  This session is full of tried and tested (and new) techniques to improve organisation and time management.

Module 3.  Managing performance

The performance management process aims to ensure that the goals of an organsiation are met in an effective and efficient manner.  We also explore how performance management can drive teams to high performance through clear leadership.  This will again be linked to individual situations and action plans.

Module 4.  Coaching in the workplace

We will explore how coaching is a key method of motivating and helping delegates fulfil their potential.  This will enable an individual to perform at a higher level of competence and achieve objectives more effectively.
